Pakistan is moving closer to completing 16 major road, highway and motorway projects as several schemes being executed under the National Highway Authority (NHA) enter their final stages.
The projects include major routes covering GT Roads, national highways and motorways. Authorities expect the completed schemes to be ready for inauguration in the near future.
The development was discussed during a meeting on NHA projects chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad.
During the meeting, officials reviewed progress on major road infrastructure projects and briefed the prime minister about schemes that are approaching completion.
The development of major highways is considered important for improving road connectivity between different regions of Pakistan. Better transportation links can also reduce travel times and support the movement of people and goods.
The projects nearing completion are expected to strengthen connections between major cities, commercial centres and other important areas.
GT Roads and national highways form a critical part of Pakistan’s transportation network. They are widely used by passenger vehicles, freight operators and businesses transporting goods between different parts of the country.
Motorway projects, meanwhile, have expanded Pakistan’s network of controlled-access roads and provided alternative routes for long-distance travel.
The completion of additional road projects could improve connectivity for communities located along the relevant routes while also supporting commercial activity.
For the government, road infrastructure remains a significant part of its broader development agenda. Large transportation projects require substantial investment and coordination among federal agencies, contractors and provincial authorities.
The National Highway Authority is responsible for several major road development and improvement schemes across the country. Progress on these projects is therefore closely monitored at the federal level.
The review chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also highlights the government’s focus on completing projects that have reached advanced stages rather than leaving infrastructure schemes unfinished.
Once the 16 projects are completed and formally opened, motorists and transport operators are expected to benefit from improved road conditions and additional connectivity.
High-quality road infrastructure can also have a wider economic impact. Efficient transportation helps businesses move raw materials and finished products more quickly, potentially reducing logistics costs and improving access to markets.
For communities along major transportation corridors, new or improved roads can also provide easier access to employment, education, healthcare and commercial centres.
The government is expected to continue monitoring the remaining work on the projects before their formal inauguration.
Further details about the individual roads, highways and motorways, including their locations, lengths and expected opening dates, may be announced as the schemes reach completion.
The latest NHA project review signals that Pakistan is approaching the completion phase of several major transportation schemes, with 16 projects expected to be ready for inauguration soon.
