The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has officially announced a public holiday across the province on the 1st of Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH, subject to the sighting of the Muharram moon by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
According to a notification issued by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Administration Department, all public offices and government institutions across the province will remain closed on the first day of the Islamic New Year once the moon sighting is officially confirmed.
The announcement comes ahead of the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year, a significant period observed by Muslims across Pakistan and around the world. The final date of the holiday will depend on the decision of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which is responsible for determining the start of Islamic months through moon sighting.
Authorities stated that the public holiday is being observed to facilitate religious observances and allow citizens to participate in events associated with the commencement of Muharram-ul-Haram. The first month of the Islamic calendar holds deep religious significance and marks the beginning of a new Hijri year.
Government departments and relevant institutions have been advised to make necessary arrangements in line with the official notification. Citizens are also encouraged to stay updated through official announcements regarding the moon sighting and the exact date of the holiday.
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam and is observed with reverence throughout the country. Various religious gatherings, processions, and commemorative events are held during the month, particularly in remembrance of the sacrifices made at Karbala.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s notification ensures that residents across the province can observe the occasion appropriately while awaiting confirmation from the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee regarding the start of Muharram 1448 AH.
