A Milestone Moment in Pakistan’s Aviation History
The New Gwadar International Airport officially became operational on Monday, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s aviation and infrastructure development. The inaugural flight, PIA PK-503, departed from Karachi at 9:50 AM with 46 passengers on board, landing at Gwadar’s new state-of-the-art airport at 11:15 AM.
Inaugural Flight Celebrations
Upon landing, the plane was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute, symbolizing a grand welcome to the airport’s first commercial operation. High-profile dignitaries, including Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, were present to commemorate the event.
A Gateway to Economic Growth
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) spokesperson expressed pride in this landmark achievement, highlighting the airport’s potential to bolster Gwadar’s economy and enhance international connectivity. With its advanced infrastructure, the facility is poised to serve as a regional hub for tourism, trade, and investment, benefiting both local and international travelers.
A CPEC Masterpiece
Built under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative, the New Gwadar International Airport stands as a testament to the collaboration between China and Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The project aligns with Gwadar’s strategic importance, aiming to position it as a pivotal node in global logistics and commerce.
Challenges and Resilience
Earlier in February 2024, operations at the airport were temporarily halted due to a prolonged 16-hour downpour. The CAA prioritized passenger safety by suspending flights until conditions stabilized. This proactive approach underscores the commitment to ensuring secure and reliable services.
