LA 2028 Olympics to Feature Cricket After Over a Century

T20 Format Selected for Both Men’s and Women’s Events

Cricket is officially returning to the Olympic Games in 2028 after a 128-year absence. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the LA 2028 Organizing Committee have confirmed that both men’s and women’s cricket tournaments will be played in the fast-paced Twenty20 (T20) format, marking a pivotal moment for the global expansion of the sport.

This will be only the second time cricket appears at the Olympics—the first being at the Paris 1900 Games, which featured a solitary match between Great Britain and France.

Six Nations to Compete in Each Category

Each tournament will feature six international teams, with every country allowed a squad of 15 players. Though the final lineup of participating nations has not yet been disclosed, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to announce the qualification pathway in the near future.

Given their current form, India’s men and New Zealand’s women, both reigning T20 world champions, are likely to be top contenders for automatic entry. However, several other cricketing nations including England, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, and the West Indies will also be vying for spots.

Cricket’s Growing Role in Multi-Sport Events

Cricket’s inclusion in LA 2028 follows its successful appearances in other multi-sport competitions. Men’s cricket debuted at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia, while women’s cricket was introduced at Birmingham 2022. The Asian Games also featured cricket events in 2010, 2014, and most recently in 2023.

These milestones reflect the increasing recognition of cricket’s entertainment value, audience reach, and international appeal.

Awaiting Details on Venue and Scheduling

Although the format and player quotas have been finalized, organizers have not yet announced the venue for cricket matches at LA 2028. Potential options include repurposing existing stadiums or constructing temporary venues suited for international cricket standards in Southern California.

The complete tournament schedule and match fixtures will be revealed as the event draws closer.

A Strategic Addition for Global Viewership

The decision to add cricket aligns with the IOC’s broader aim to diversify Olympic viewership. Cricket, with an estimated global fan base exceeding 2.5 billion, promises to bring in audiences from major cricket-loving nations across Asia, Oceania, the Caribbean, and the UK.

Alongside cricket, the LA 2028 Games will introduce other new sports such as squash, lacrosse (sixes), flag football, and the return of baseball/softball—catering to a modern, global audience and signaling a shift in Olympic priorities toward inclusivity and cultural diversity in sport.
