Pakistan Railways and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government have signed a framework agreement to jointly expand and modernize the province’s railway network, marking a significant step toward improving rail connectivity and suburban transport in KP.
Under the agreement, around 240 kilometers of railway lines will be upgraded across several important routes. The initiative is aimed at strengthening existing railway infrastructure and improving transportation links between major cities and surrounding areas.
The proposed routes include Peshawar-Nowshera-Jahangira, Nowshera-Mardan-Dargai, Nowshera-Mardan-Charsadda, Nasirpur (Chamkani)-Jamrud and the Jamrud-Landi Kotal Safari Railway.
The planned upgrades could provide better connectivity for commuters, students, workers and businesses traveling between key districts. Improved railway services may also offer an alternative to road transportation, particularly on routes with heavy daily traffic.
The Peshawar-Nowshera-Jahangira route is among the key corridors included in the framework. Peshawar serves as a major urban and commercial center in the province, while Nowshera and Jahangira are important connecting points for regional movement.
Another proposed corridor, Nowshera-Mardan-Dargai, could strengthen rail links with some of KP’s major population centers. Similarly, the Nowshera-Mardan-Charsadda route has the potential to improve access between several important districts.
The proposed Nasirpur (Chamkani)-Jamrud route is also part of the modernization plan. Jamrud is an important gateway toward the former tribal districts and the Khyber region, making improved rail connectivity strategically and economically significant.
The framework agreement also includes the Jamrud-Landi Kotal Safari Railway. This route could support tourism alongside transportation, particularly by improving access to the historic Khyber region and its surrounding attractions.
The 240-kilometer upgrade plan reflects broader efforts to modernize railway infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Better rail services could help reduce pressure on busy roads while providing passengers with a more reliable transportation option.
