Punjab’s major textile hub, Faisalabad, is set to undergo a massive sewerage system upgrade aimed at solving long-standing drainage issues. The Water and Sanitation Agency Faisalabad has prepared a PC-II project worth Rs. 141 billion to modernize the city’s aging infrastructure and improve sanitation services.

The project has been designed to tackle sewerage challenges that have persisted in the city for decades. Rapid urban growth and expanding industrial activity have placed increasing pressure on the existing drainage network, making a comprehensive overhaul necessary to meet the city’s growing needs.

Officials say the initiative will introduce sustainable and climate-resilient solutions to improve wastewater management across Faisalabad. The upgraded system is expected to enhance drainage capacity, reduce flooding risks during heavy rainfall, and improve overall sanitation conditions in residential and industrial areas.

The project also aligns with broader environmental and climate goals. Authorities are focusing on infrastructure improvements that can better withstand the effects of climate change while supporting sustainable urban development.

The proposed sewerage upgrade follows the long-term development framework outlined in the city’s master plan. This plan was prepared with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which has been assisting in designing infrastructure solutions for Faisalabad’s future urban expansion.

According to officials, the master plan sets development targets through 2028 and focuses on strengthening essential urban infrastructure, including drainage, wastewater treatment, and water supply systems.

Faisalabad is one of Pakistan’s most important industrial centers, particularly known for its textile sector. Efficient sanitation infrastructure is critical for supporting industrial operations, protecting public health, and ensuring sustainable economic growth in the region.

Urban planners believe the Rs. 141 billion sewerage upgrade could significantly improve the city’s environmental conditions and help manage wastewater more effectively. The project is expected to play a key role in modernizing Faisalabad’s municipal services and preparing the city for future growth.

If approved and implemented, the initiative will represent one of the largest sanitation infrastructure investments in the region, addressing critical urban challenges while supporting long-term development goals.
