As the decision regarding the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy looms, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has firmly reiterated the board’s stance. Speaking at a press conference held at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi emphasized that the PCB will prioritize equality and fairness in all decisions concerning the tournament’s hosting.
Firm Communication with ICC
Naqvi revealed ongoing discussions with ICC chairman Greg Barclay, ensuring that Pakistan’s position is understood at the highest level. “Our stance is clear—we’re here to do what’s best for Pakistan cricket,” Naqvi stated. “Equality in hosting and participation is non-negotiable.”
He underlined that Pakistan would not entertain an arrangement where Indian teams refuse to tour Pakistan while expecting Pakistan to play in India. “It’s unacceptable. We’ve communicated this clearly to the ICC,” he added.
The Hybrid Model Debate
India’s refusal to send their team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy has led to discussions of a hybrid model, where India’s matches would be played at a neutral venue. However, Naqvi dismissed this option, urging the ICC to provide written objections if India had any issues.
“We have no intention of accepting a hybrid model,” Naqvi stated unequivocally. “Our hosting rights and Pakistan’s dignity will not be compromised.”
Future Implications
The impasse could have broader repercussions. Naqvi hinted that Pakistan’s participation in future ICC events hosted by India, such as the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup, might be reconsidered unless equitable resolutions are reached.
“We won’t sell our rights for financial gains. Our focus is solely on what benefits Pakistan cricket,” Naqvi assured, as the ICC’s November 29 meeting draws closer.
