The federal government has taken a significant step toward sustainable urban management by introducing a fleet of electric vehicles to the Islamabad Capital Territory Traffic Police. This initiative reflects a broader push to modernize traffic systems while reducing fuel dependency and operational costs in the capital.

The induction ceremony, held in Islamabad, was attended by Shehbaz Sharif as the chief guest. Officials highlighted that the addition of 15 electric vehicles marks the first phase of a larger plan aligned with the government’s energy efficiency and environmental sustainability goals.

These eco-friendly vehicles are expected to enhance traffic management across major roads in Islamabad. With quicker response capabilities and improved mobility, traffic police will be better equipped to handle congestion and emergencies in high-traffic areas.

Each vehicle will be staffed by a trained team, including a captain, responders, and a driver, all assigned specific operational roles. Authorities have also introduced special uniforms for these teams to support a more organized and professional traffic control system.

According to official briefings, the electric vehicles offer an impressive driving range of 350 to 400 kilometers on a full charge. Fast charging can be completed within 60 to 90 minutes, while standard charging takes between 6 to 8 hours, making them practical for daily urban deployment.

In addition to operational efficiency, the move is expected to deliver substantial financial benefits. Compared to conventional petrol-powered vehicles, each electric unit could save approximately Rs. 0.55 million per month in fuel costs. These savings are projected to offset the initial investment within 13 to 14 months, making the initiative both environmentally and economically viable.

The government has also signaled plans to expand the fleet further, with an additional 15 electric vehicles expected to be introduced in the near future. This expansion will strengthen the capital’s transition toward a cleaner and more technologically advanced traffic management system.

The initiative underscores Pakistan’s growing focus on green mobility solutions and efficient public service delivery. By integrating electric vehicles into law enforcement operations, authorities aim to set a precedent for other cities to follow.
