Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a landmark initiative to provide free state land to peasants starting in April. The program, titled “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar,” aims to strengthen the agricultural backbone of the province and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Under the scheme, all cultivable government land across Punjab will be leased to eligible farmers for a period of 10 years. Each beneficiary will receive up to five acres of land free of charge, with no lease payments required during the tenure.
The chief minister described the initiative as a transformative step designed to empower small-scale farmers and landless peasants. By granting access to productive land without financial burden, the government intends to boost agricultural output and rural income levels.
Officials say the policy will help unlock unused or underutilized government land, bringing it into active cultivation. The move is also expected to generate employment in rural areas, particularly among young farmers seeking opportunities in agriculture.
The “Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar” scheme is being positioned as part of Punjab’s broader strategy to modernize the agricultural sector. Authorities aim to complement land allocation with support measures such as access to quality seeds, technical guidance, and market facilitation to ensure long-term productivity.
Agriculture remains a key pillar of Punjab’s economy, contributing significantly to food security and exports. By offering land for free use, the government hopes to reduce poverty in rural communities and promote inclusive economic growth.
The initiative is scheduled to roll out in April, with detailed eligibility criteria and application procedures expected to be announced by relevant departments. Officials have emphasized that transparency and merit-based selection will guide the allocation process.
With rising input costs and economic pressures impacting farmers nationwide, the free land scheme could provide much-needed relief. The success of the program will depend on effective implementation, monitoring, and support systems to help beneficiaries maximize their yields over the 10-year lease period.
