Disturbing Numbers Highlighted by the Foreign Ministry
In a recent parliamentary session, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry disclosed that 10,279 of its citizens are imprisoned in Saudi Arabia. The majority are held in Riyadh (5,341 detainees) and Jeddah (4,848 detainees), reflecting a widespread issue.
Criminal Offenses Under Scrutiny
The detainees are accused of committing 18 different crimes. These range from border security violations and drug trafficking to cybercrime, smuggling, and even severe charges like murder and money laundering.
Philanthropists Step Up to Help
The past three years have seen the release of 253 Pakistani prisoners, achieved through the generous efforts of philanthropists. Their contributions have been pivotal in securing freedom for many detainees unable to afford legal or financial support.
Repatriation Plans on the Horizon
The ministry is actively working to bring home 400 prisoners currently detained in Saudi jails. Ongoing discussions with Saudi authorities are focused on streamlining the repatriation process.
