Pakistan’s Deputy PM Engages in Key Diplomatic Meetings at CHOGM

At the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, held productive meetings with key global leaders. One such significant interaction took place with Md. Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s Adviser for Foreign Affairs. This initial engagement since both officials took office laid the foundation for a renewed and strengthened partnership between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Enhancing Shared Cultural and Historical Connections

Deputy PM Dar highlighted the rich historical, cultural, and religious ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh, emphasizing their shared legacy. Both countries acknowledged the importance of cultural exchanges and people-to-people interactions in fostering mutual understanding. This commitment underscores a dedication to reconnecting on a deeper level, bringing the two nations closer through shared heritage.

Focus on Economic and Regional Cooperation

In their discussions, both leaders identified trade and economic collaboration as essential areas of focus. They agreed on the importance of high-level engagement in promoting economic growth, increased trade, and investment opportunities. The revitalization of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was also highlighted, with Pakistan and Bangladesh agreeing to support SAARC’s mission of fostering regional cooperation and development across South Asia.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations Beyond the Region

Senator Dar’s meetings extended beyond Bangladesh, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties worldwide. In talks with the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Sam Matekane, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, cultural exchange, and mutual support in international forums. Additionally, in a productive discussion with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorker Botchwey, both countries committed to increasing collaboration in education and investment. The Deputy Prime Minister extended an invitation for Ghana to establish a resident mission in Islamabad to further strengthen these ties.

Through these engagements at CHOGM, Pakistan reiterated its commitment to fostering long-term, meaningful relationships with its global partners, advancing its diplomatic vision for a connected and prosperous future.
