In a groundbreaking medical achievement, surgeons at Pakistan’s Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI) in Lahore have made history. They’ve completed the country’s first-ever split liver transplant and its first pancreas transplant, offering renewed hope for thousands of patients.
The Need for Liver Transplants Sadly, an estimated 8,000 people in Pakistan require life-saving liver transplants each year due to liver failure or liver cancer. This highlights the desperate need for advanced transplant procedures within the country.
One Donor, Multiple Lives Saved Thanks to the selfless decision of a young man named Uzair Bin Yasin, lives were transformed. After being declared brain dead in a Rawalpindi hospital, Uzair’s wish to donate his organs was honored. His liver, kidneys, pancreas, and eyes were all donated, giving seven people a fighting chance.
The Split Liver Transplant PKLI’s CEO, Dr. Faisal Saud Dar, explained that Uzair’s liver was carefully divided, allowing surgeons to perform Pakistan’s first split liver transplant. This incredible technique saved both a 33-year-old adult and a young boy, both battling organ failure.
The Pancreas Transplant Uzair’s pancreas brought further hope, enabling Pakistan’s very first pancreas transplant. This life-changing procedure was performed on a patient with Type-1 diabetes.
