Pakistan and Maldives Agree to Explore Direct Flights to Boost Tourism

Pakistan and the Maldives have agreed to explore the possibility of launching direct air links between the two countries, aiming to promote tourism, improve connectivity and strengthen bilateral relations. The initiative is expected to create new opportunities for travellers and support closer cooperation between the two nations.

Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu welcomed ongoing discussions about establishing direct flights during his three-day state visit to Pakistan. He highlighted the importance of improved air connectivity in bringing people closer and encouraging greater tourism-related engagement.

Speaking at a joint ceremony with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Muizzu identified tourism as an important area for future cooperation. He also highlighted the potential for developing halal and Muslim-friendly tourism, an area where both countries could benefit from shared cultural values and experiences.

The proposed air links could make travel between Pakistan and the Maldives more convenient for tourists, businesspeople and other visitors. The Maldives is widely recognised for its island resorts and marine attractions, while Pakistan offers diverse landscapes, historical destinations and cultural experiences that could appeal to international travellers.

Direct flights, if introduced, could reduce the need for connecting journeys and make travel planning easier. Improved access may also encourage tourism businesses, hotels, travel agencies and tour operators in both countries to explore new partnerships.

However, the two countries have agreed to explore direct connectivity, and the available information does not confirm that flight operations have officially been launched. Details such as routes, airline operators, fares and commencement dates would depend on further discussions and arrangements.

President Muizzu’s visit also resulted in broader commitments to strengthen cooperation across several sectors. During the visit, Pakistan and the Maldives signed 20 agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) covering areas including tourism, information technology, healthcare, education, agriculture, fisheries and defence.

These agreements reflect the two countries’ interest in expanding their relationship beyond traditional diplomatic engagement. Cooperation in technology, education and healthcare could create opportunities for institutional partnerships, professional exchanges and knowledge sharing.

Economic relations were another important focus of the discussions. The leaders agreed to work towards increasing bilateral trade from $13.9 million to $200 million within the next two years. Achieving this target would require expanded commercial activity and stronger engagement between businesses in both countries.

Tourism connectivity could contribute to these wider economic ambitions by supporting travel-related services and creating opportunities for investment. Improved transport links may also help businesses establish stronger connections and explore new markets.

The visit holds additional diplomatic significance as Pakistan and the Maldives mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, established in 1966. President Muizzu’s trip is also the first visit by a Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years, making it an important milestone in bilateral engagement.

The discussions demonstrate a shared interest in developing closer ties through tourism, trade and cooperation in multiple sectors. If the proposed direct flights move forward, they could become an important part of efforts to improve people-to-people connections and encourage more visitors between the two countries.

For now, the focus remains on exploring the proposed air links and implementing the agreements reached during the presidential visit. Further announcements will be needed to confirm the launch of direct flights and explain how the new arrangements will work for travellers.

The initiative represents a potential step towards stronger Pakistan-Maldives relations, with tourism, economic cooperation and improved connectivity emerging as key areas for future collaboration.
