Sindh Government to Release Wheat Stocks to Control Flour Prices

The Sindh government has approved the release of official wheat stocks in an effort to stabilize flour prices and maintain a steady supply of wheat across the province.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has approved the release of government-held wheat stocks from October 15. The move is aimed at increasing market supply and easing pressure on flour prices.

Under the approved plan, wheat will be released at Rs. 12,500 per 100-kilogram bag. This price is lower than the current open-market rate in Karachi, where the same quantity is reportedly selling for around Rs. 13,200.

The difference between the government release price and the open-market price is intended to help reduce the cost pressure faced by flour mills and consumers. Authorities are also seeking to prevent supply disruptions that could contribute to further increases in flour prices.

The decision comes as wheat and flour prices remain an important concern for consumers across Sindh. Flour is a basic food item for households, making changes in its price directly relevant to household budgets.

By releasing wheat from government stocks, provincial authorities aim to improve availability in the market rather than relying entirely on private-sector supplies. Increased availability could help create downward pressure on prices if the wheat reaches the market through the planned distribution system.

Karachi, as the province’s largest city and a major commercial center, is particularly important in the wheat and flour market. The current open-market price of Rs. 13,200 per 100-kilogram bag provides a reference point for the government’s decision to release wheat at a lower rate.

The government’s intervention is also expected to support uninterrupted wheat supplies throughout Sindh. Maintaining consistent availability is considered important for preventing sudden price increases caused by shortages or disruptions in the supply chain.

The wheat release will begin on October 15, according to the approved plan. Market conditions following the release will determine how effectively the additional government stocks influence wheat and flour prices.

For consumers, the main expectation is that greater wheat availability will help contain flour prices and reduce the possibility of further increases. Flour mills and other market participants will also be watching the government’s wheat release and its impact on supply and pricing.

The Sindh government’s latest decision therefore represents a direct market intervention aimed at managing wheat availability and supporting price stability. The coming weeks will provide a clearer indication of how the release of government stocks affects flour prices across the province.
