Parliamentarians Celebrate 27th Amendment with Traditional Halwa and Lassi Breakfast at Parliament House

ISLAMABAD: Lawmakers from Pakistan’s ruling coalition reportedly marked the completion of work on the 27th Constitutional Amendment with a festive breakfast reception hosted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Parliament House on Monday morning.

The event, held at the Banquet Hall inside Parliament House, brought together senators from coalition parties, key members of the federal cabinet, and senior officials to commemorate the legislative milestone.

According to sources, the breakfast gathering served both as a gesture of appreciation and as a show of unity among government allies following the passage of the amendment.

PM Shehbaz meets coalition senators
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally greeted attendees and expressed gratitude for their cooperation and hard work in finalizing the 27th Amendment. The prime minister emphasized that the successful passage of the bill reflected “collective democratic strength and the coalition’s commitment to institutional reform.”

He was joined by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and several other senior members of the government, who applauded the senators for their support during recent parliamentary sessions.

Traditional breakfast menu adds flavour to celebration
In true Pakistani fashion, the morning gathering featured a spread of traditional breakfast favourites. Lawmakers were served chapati, naan, halwa, fried eggs, omelettes, and potato bhaji, alongside lassi and chilled beverages.

The simple yet festive menu quickly became the highlight of the event, with some parliamentarians jokingly referring to it as a “halwa diplomacy” celebration — a lighthearted nod to the long-standing tradition of marking legislative achievements with sweet dishes.

Several attendees described the atmosphere as “cordial and cheerful,” noting that even after weeks of intense debates, the breakfast served as an opportunity for coalition members to unwind and reaffirm their political alignment.

Political significance of the 27th Amendment
While official details about the full scope of the 27th Constitutional Amendment have yet to be publicly released, insiders say it addresses structural reforms aimed at enhancing governance and legislative efficiency.

The breakfast event, however, underscored more than just the conclusion of parliamentary work — it highlighted the government’s efforts to project cohesion among its coalition partners amid ongoing political challenges.

The Prime Minister’s Office has yet to release an official statement on the breakfast, but images and accounts from those present have already circulated across social media, sparking humorous commentary and light political banter online.

For many observers, the sight of senators sharing halwa and lassi at Parliament House symbolized both a cultural and political reminder that, in Pakistan’s corridors of power, politics often comes served with a side of tradition.
