New Bijli Sahulat Package to Cut Winter Power Costs for Pakistanis
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has introduced the Bijli Sahulat Package, a seasonal relief program aimed at reducing electricity costs for Pakistanis through the winter months of December, January, and February. This initiative provides a substantial per-unit reduction in electricity prices for various consumer groups.
Who Benefits and How Much?
Under the Bijli Sahulat Package:
- Residential consumers can save up to Rs. 26 per unit
- Business consumers receive a discount of up to Rs. 22.71 per unit
- Industrial consumers can expect savings of Rs. 15.05 per unit
The package, however, applies only to those who increase their consumption by 25% over last winter’s usage, encouraging households and businesses to utilize power at reduced rates without hesitation.
Background of Rising Power Tariffs
This relief comes at a time when NEPRA has proposed a substantial rate hike as part of the quarterly adjustment. This adjustment, requested by the government, could place an additional Rs. 8.72 billion burden on consumers as part of the efforts to balance rising energy costs. The regulatory body will hold a hearing on November 20 to review the adjustment proposal.
The Bijli Sahulat Package serves as a critical response to the rising cost of energy, offering a much-needed buffer for electricity consumers across Pakistan.
