Karachi to Begin Rehabilitation of 140 More Roads This Week Under Rs. 13 Billion Plan

Karachi is preparing for another major infrastructure development as the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) gets ready to start rehabilitation work on approximately 140 additional roads across the city. The new phase is part of a Rs. 13 billion development programme aimed at improving road conditions and addressing transportation challenges.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced on Monday that the tendering process for the upcoming projects had been completed. He said the corporation would issue work orders within the next two to three days, with construction expected to begin before the end of this week.

The initiative is expected to expand ongoing efforts to improve Karachi’s road network and provide better travel facilities to residents. The rehabilitation of 140 more roads could help address infrastructure problems affecting commuters in different neighbourhoods.

Road conditions have remained a significant concern for people travelling across Karachi. Damaged surfaces, potholes and uneven roads frequently create difficulties for motorists, motorcyclists, public transport operators and pedestrians.

These problems can also increase travel times, contribute to traffic congestion and raise vehicle maintenance costs. For residents who travel long distances every day, the condition of major and connecting roads directly affects their daily routines.

Through the Rs. 13 billion development programme, KMC is seeking to improve the city’s existing infrastructure and make transportation more convenient. The addition of approximately 140 roads to the rehabilitation programme represents another step towards addressing these long-standing concerns.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s announcement suggests that the project has moved beyond its initial administrative preparations. With the tendering process completed, the next stage involves issuing work orders and mobilising contractors to begin construction.

The expected start of work by the end of this week will be an important development for the city’s infrastructure programme. However, the actual benefits will depend on how efficiently the construction activities are managed and completed.

Timely execution will be particularly important to minimise inconvenience for residents and businesses located along the affected routes. Construction activities may temporarily affect traffic movement, making proper planning and coordination essential.

Maintaining construction standards will also be necessary to ensure that rehabilitated roads remain usable for an extended period. Effective drainage systems, quality materials and regular maintenance can help prevent newly repaired surfaces from developing similar problems again.

Karachi’s growing population and increasing traffic demand have placed considerable pressure on its transportation infrastructure. Improving road connectivity is therefore important not only for daily commuters but also for commercial activities, public services and the city’s overall economic movement.

The rehabilitation of 140 additional roads is expected to contribute to these broader development objectives. Better road conditions can support smoother transportation, improve accessibility between neighbourhoods and reduce some of the difficulties associated with travelling across the metropolitan city.

As the construction phase approaches, residents will be looking forward to seeing practical improvements in their respective areas. The successful completion of the planned projects could become an important part of Karachi’s wider infrastructure improvement efforts.

With work orders expected within days, the focus will now shift towards the implementation of the Rs. 13 billion programme and the rehabilitation of the additional roads across Karachi.
